Appeal letter (defer standing) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Appeal letter (defer standing) - Essay Example She controls my credit card and has twice failed to give me money for my daily upkeep and tuition fees. As an international student, this affects my schoolwork as the stress of finding money to cater for tuition fees and daily life is very high. I did not perform very well in my last exams, thus she sent me back to china. However, through begging she gave me a second chance. On 30th December last year, I went to China to visit my folks. Unfortunately, my parents had already divorced and father was now living with his younger lover. The new relationship that my father was into was now over two years old. It was depressing that my father cheated on my mother before the divorce with this girl. Before my arrival in China, I thought everything could turn up well but contrary the opposite happened; I got more depressed. What was annoying is that father treated the new girl much better than my mother; he showered her with love and care. He also prepared food for the new girlfriend something I have never seen him do for my mother. This made my life more unbearable, anger and jealousy clouded my mind. China was now intolerable and at some moment felt like returning to Canada. However, going to Canada at that time could not be possible considering the intense and deteriorative relationship with my aunt. The divorce agreement of my parents saw my mother retain the house. However, her wages are low making it difficult for her to pay the rent while sustaining the family. My mother’s death only worsened the situation; it deeply affected me emotionally and psychologically. It is a miracle I stayed strong until now. Each day was a nightmare and concentrating with my academic revision was impossible. Many times my mind was clouded with things beyond my control, always thinking on how unfair life has become. Last year I was very serious with my academics, always reviewing my notes in time and reading ahead of the teacher. However, now I seem to

The Long and the Short and the Tall Essay Example for Free

The Long and the Short and the Tall Essay In the drama The Long and The Short and The Tall, the playwright Willis Hall convincingly uses the characters and their reactions to their situation to effectively reveal the theme of war. The play centres around seven soldiers in the First World War, who have become separated from their platoon and are stuck in the Malayan Jungle with only weapons, a minimal food supply and each other. The first part of the play concentrates on how the soldiers relate to each other in this isolated and pressurising situation, and we find out what kind of people they are. Later on though, they find a Japanese soldier and have to let him live with them in their hut. However, they must decide how to deal with him in the long run and in the end, after many arguments and changes of heart, an example of the harsh reality of war is demonstrated they kill him, surprising themselves as much as anyone. The play finishes unpredictably, with all of the soldiers but one being killed after leaving the hut. This soldier, Johnston, surrenders to the Japanese, and what is going to happen to him is foreseeable. The first important aspect we see which influences the characters and shows the idea of war is the setting. The setting is described to us before any dialogue takes place: A short burst of heavy gunfire is heard in the distance and then silence. A pause and then we hear the chirruping of crickets in the jungle. This would seem a rather strange setting for a war, and an equally strange place for sounds like gunshots to be heard, as it would seem to contrast to the peaceful setting. However, here Hall is conveying the idea that war affects everything, and that the soldiers are in a very isolated, claustrophobic place. Being confined to a small hut in the jungle makes the soldiers feel tense and causes their emotions to be magnified and brought out on each other, resulting in their arguing and mocking. An example of this occurs quite early in the play, where the soldiers are already starting to feel the effects of isolation and two, Bamforth and Evans, are having an argument. Bamforth is mocking Evans: Get back to Wales, you Cardiff creep. Only good for digging coal and singing hymns, you crummy lot. This helps to reveal the theme of war because individuals do not usually mock people unnecessarily and due to the isolated situation he is in Bamforth may be resorting to this to hide his own fear, or even for want of something better to do. The use of escapism is a second indication that the drama is set while a war is taking place. Earlier on in the play, the soldiers spend a while discussing personal matters like their families and houses: Did you do any gardening, Smudge, before you came into the army? enquires Evans of Smith. Smith answers by describing his garden, ending with: I suppose the kids have racked it up. This seems somewhat strange as a garden appears a bit of an odd thing to be worrying about in the middle of a war. It also feels rather odd to the readers, as we know that it is highly unlikely that Smith will ever see his home and family again. Also, it shows that the war has an effect on peoples feelings, making them think more about their homes and families and appreciate them more. Discussing families serves as distraction to the men, who are just ordinary people needing a way to escape from the horror of their state of affairs. Private Evans has a womens magazine, Ladys Companion and Home. Although at first he is teased about this, the soldiers eventually engage in a debate about one of the topics, again helping to take their minds off things. This leads to a further discussion about families; we learn about the soldiers girlfriends, wives and children. It is noticed, however, that Bamforth mentions nothing at all about his personal life, revealing a nature that does not wish to share individual stories, or is possibly jealous. One further example of escapism comes when Whitaker is seen darning his socks for: kit inspection Saturday morning. This is something that is not expected of the men, revealing a soft side not incorporated in the typical image of a soldier. This again reveals the theme of war by showing it meddles with peoples emotions the men unintentionally show their tender sides whilst doing anything to take their minds of the depressing situation that is war. The soldiers reactions to their radio, which is broken and so consequently useless, helps to take the theme of war further. Bamforth refuses to get excited when Whitaker thinks he hears something during his attempts to contact the rest of the platoon: Bamforth: So whats the use. Whitaker: I got something through, Im telling you. Bamforth: Thats your story, boy. You stick to it. Evans is not convinced either, saying: Perhaps you just imagined it, Sammy boy. This shows that war depresses people, and causes them to have negative attitudes, as they do not want to build their hopes up and be let down. However, when Whitaker tries a second time, both Evans and MacLeish think they have heard something as well, though Bamforth again refuses to let it get his hopes up: Bamforth: Ah, so what. Evans: I heard voices, Bammo! Bamforth: So what does that make you? Joan of Arc? Could have been any of the mobs up the jungle. We can see that he does not wish to get excited about something that may turn out to be unimportant, in order not to disappoint himself. However, when he realises that no one is behind him he resorts to taunts and sarcasm to stop him feeling defeated. This comes back to the theme of war in that it brings out pessimism and negative attitudes in people, and that it causes conflict between the soldiers who are suddenly bundled together in a confined space. Whitaker tries the radio a third time, and finds that although he picks up a small amount of sound, the radio fades due to a dead battery. Johnston gets irritated then, thinking that the dead battery could have prevented something important coming through: Damn duff equipment. Whole damn issues duff. It is the fault of the broken radio, which was issued by the British Army, that the men are in this situation in the first place. This shows that the men are at the mercy of those in control, indicating they have been placed there to do duties in a war that is not theirs, but their governments. Johnston and Mitchem smoke to calm themselves this scene shows the fear and frustration that war causes. Meanwhile, Whitaker is still trying to tune into the radio. After four tries, the radio bursts into life at long last, and a Japanese voice is heard. The soldiers react with sarcastic, forced humour: Bring on the Geisha girls! This again shows the topic of war because it demonstrates the soldiers fear the forced humour is their way of dealing with it. As the Japanese army approach, the soldiers reactions to this reveal further the war theme. At first, Evans acts as though he is not concerned because he feels that they are too far away to pose a threat: Its twenty miles at least! However, he could just be trying to convince himself, and signs of worry and anxiety are certainly showing among the other men: Whitaker: It was as clear as a bell! They could be sitting right on top of us! MacLeish: Ive got my brother posted out there! MacLeish continues this worry over his brother further into the play, and his naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½vety is displayed; he clearly knows nothing about how British prisoners of war are treated, and after they find the Japanese Soldier he goes to question Mitchem on the matter. At the same time he tries to convince himself that his brother will be treated fairly: MacLeish: You hear so many stories you know, on how the Japs treat P.O.Ws. Mitchem: Pretty rough, they reckon. MacLeish: Im not so sure. You hear all kinds of things, as if theyre almostanimals. But this bloke seems a decent sort of bloke. The approach of the Japanese is making him wonder if his brother has been made a prisoner. This shows the theme of war because it shows war makes people think more about their families. Mitchem, rather than comforting MacLeish, adopts a realistic approach and shows good leadership, as he knows his men must be prepared. One further aspect that reveals the theme of war is the soldiers reaction to the Japanese Soldier they have come across. The soldiers struggle to decide whether or not to kill the soldier in a battle of survival versus rules Mitchem reckons the soldier has to be sacrificed in order for them to survive, while the Geneva Convention stands to prevent them doing this. As we can see from the above, MacLeish sympathises with the soldier, and is not hostile towards him, displaying the idea that war is between governments and not individuals (although he changes his opinion later on.) He is kind to the soldier, trying to convince himself that if he treats this one soldier well, the opposing soldiers will be treating his brother well, should he have been made a prisoner of war. However he finds it hard to hold on to his morals this is shown in his changing attitude towards the soldier. When a British cigarette case is found, he thinks again of his brother but in a different way. This quick change of opinion reveals the theme of war by showing that war produces instinctive reactions. Most of the other soldiers react as we would expect from what we know of their personalities Johnston is an aggressive, power-hungry bully who hates the enemy and is eager to kill the soldier, having no doubts from the start: Stick it in! Dont stand there tossing the odds! Just close your eyes and woof it in! He is not really thinking about what he is doing he just sees the soldier as the opposition, not a person, who has to be killed because that is, in his opinion, the way war works. Again this demonstrates the idea that the war is between governments, who tell their soldiers what they expect from them and this has to be carried out. Evans, whom Johnston is addressing at this point, finds himself unable to kill the soldier, which doesnt surprise us because he is quite a soft, kind-hearted person. This highlights the fact that in situations like war ordinary men are put in impossible situations, again helping to reveal this theme. One reaction to the Japanese soldier that comes as a surprise is that of Bamforth. Although he comes across as rather a violent, sarcastic joker without any detectable sensitive side he defends the opposing soldier and is friendly to him, and even goes as far as to make a joke attempt to teach him English: I said, get your fingers up on your head! Like this! See! Flingers on the blonce! All light? At the very end, where all the other soldiers appear to have unanimously decide to kill the soldier Bamforth sticks by him loyally. He raises the question of morality in war, asking himself and the others if it is right to kill someone just because he is wearing the wrong uniform. He sees the soldier as an individual, like them, realising that he too has a family, which would be left without a husband and a father, should he be killed. It sometimes seems that Bamforth does not want to be there, he refusal to kill the soldier may even convey the fact that he is against the war all together. In the end, it is Whitaker the youngest and most vulnerable soldier in the patrol who clumsily shoots the soldier and leads his troop to discovery and death. This is ironic because he has consistently been the most timid member of the group. The incident clearly shows the negative effect of young and badly trained soldiers being placed in horrendous situations like war. The fact that it is Johnston, the most violent member of the patrol, who should survive at the end of the play is also ironic, as after constantly telling his own patrol to kill the enemy that was the opposing soldier, he himself surrenders to the Japanese. In conclusion, I find that Halls message about war is successfully conveyed through the characters. Each character reacts differently to the circumstances, illustrating that war concerns everybody and has many different effects. Through some of the characters, especially Bamforth and his bonding with the Japanese soldier, Hall illustrates one of his most important messages war is between governments, not individuals.

themebeo Epic of Beowulf Essay - Theme and Style of Beowulf

The Theme and Style of Beowulf  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚      Interpretations of Beowulf’s theme vary much more than commentary on the poet’s style. In this essay I hope to state clearly some of the popularly mentioned themes running through the poem, and to carefully delineate many aspects of the author’s style.    â€Å"Many critics feel that the speech of Hrothgar between lines 1700 and 1784 encapsulates the moral of the poem†¦.’He does not know the worse – till inside him great arrogance grows and spreads’† (Shippey 38). Is the theme of the poem that pride kills? Hrothgar’s ominous words do come back to haunt the hero more than once. Beowulf is a braggart; he is proud, and nothing seems able to change his basic proud outlook derived from his all-powerful physical strength. Even shortly before his own defeat against the fire-dragon, our hero is recalling his killing of the great hero of the Hugas with his bare hands:    ever since the time,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   in front of the hosts, I slew Daeghrefn,  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   the champion of the Hugas, with my bare hands.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   He never brought back his breast-ornament  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   to the Frisian king: the standard-bearer   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   fell in combat a prince, in valor;  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   no edge killed him my hand-grip crushed  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   his beating heart, his life’s bone-house (2501-09).    Yes, Beowulf was full of pride and self-confidence; this made him impetuous in his actions. Financial Analysis

Budget a detailed plan, expressed in quantitative terms, that specifies how resources will be acquired and used during a specified period of time. A budget is a description of a financial plan. It Is a list of estimates of revenues to and expenditures by an agent for a stated period of time. Normally a budget describes a period In the future not the past Purposes of budgeting systems: Planning Facilitating Communication and Coordination Allocating Resources Controlling Profit and Operations Evaluating Performance and Providing Incentives Using a budgeting system companies can:Improve cash flow Optimize product portfolio Minimize salary adjournment Increase the operational level Eliminate breaks In Production process Stabilize debts level Precisely determine the real financing needs In Bangladesh our fiscal year is started from 1st of July and ended 30th June of the next year. Here we wants make a comprehensive analysis of the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2014-2015. Th e honorable finance Minister AMA Mitch proposed this budget dated on 05. 04. 2014 in Bangladesh national assembly members for the consideration and approval of the said budget. The annual budget t a glance Total size of the budget TX 250,506 core for 2014-15 fiscal year growth target of 7. 3% of GAP The proposed national budget and the economy (FYI), 2014-2015, provides an account of the government's overall fiscal operations in pursuit of its declared goals and objectives to help promote â€Å"accelerated† and â€Å"inclusive† economic growth. It makes a lot of promises about improving government's performance-related scorecard. But it does not shed enough light on why the promises of the outgoing fiscal could not be redeemed and what wrongs there were about meeting its projected broad targets. The political turbulence or violence that was witnessed in the first half of the outgoing fiscal can not be held solely responsible for it. This is more so when the official econ omic growth figure for the outgoing fiscal that Finance Minister AMA Mitch has, in his budget speech, mentioned tends to defy the predictions and projections that were made by different quarters during the period of political volatility and also subsequent to it, taking in view the possible adverse knock-on effects of the turbulence on the performance of the national economy in all its major sectors. If the official growth figure about the entry's gross domestic product (GAP) in the outgoing fiscal portrays the real state of the economy, then there are obvious reasons to discard largely the links between the polity and the economy in the Bangladesh context. How far this is realistic to assume so, despite some clearly demonstrated inherent shock-absorbing capacity of the Bangladesh economy and also the proven resilience of its main economic actors, remains otherwise questionable.Yet then, the figures and data that the Finance Minister has mentioned about the performance of the economy in fiscal 2013-14 do unmistakably bear out shortfalls in any areas of consequence. This is so, in terms of the targets that were set in the Sixth Five Year Plan (SPY) document. The forthcoming fiscal being the terminal year of this medium-term plan that was approved by the government during its immediate-past tenure, it does not require a pundit to state that its goals and objectives would remain largely unmet. This will certainly further compound Bangladesh problems to fulfill its cherished national hope about reaching the status of a middle income country by 2021. If its existing situation does not change for the utter by a quantum leap, it will be well-nigh impossible to meet the whole set of Millennium Development Goals (Meds), particularly in areas like nutrition, effective health coverage etc. , that are much needed for poverty alleviation. In his budgetary proposals for the forthcoming fiscal, the Finance Minister has projected an aggregate expenditure outlay of about Take 2. 0 trillion, reflecting a rise by 15. 7 per cent over the revised budget of Take 2. 16 trillion for the outgoing one. There is no strong reason to consider the proposed size of the next fiscals national edged over-bloated, in view of the fact that overall public (government) expenditures, covering both current and development ones, will still be around 18. 7 per cent of GAP. The share of the proposed current (revenue and non-development capital) expenditures at Take 1. 7 trillion will be 12. Per cent of GAP while that of public investment (ADAPT) at Take 803. 15 billion will be 6. 0 per cent of GAP in the forthcoming fiscal. Such budgetary expenditures in comparator countries. But two critical questions still arise here: Has the government the capacity to implement the proposed national edged, particularly that part of it which concerns the Annual Development Programmer (ADAPT)? What is about the quality of overall public expenditures, to assess their impact in terms of value-for-mo ney, to link inputs with outputs and to count costs against benefits? These questions are of consequence because it has rather become a routine practice in Bangladesh to downsize the ADAPT in the third or last quarter of every fiscal because of implementation shortfall, on one hand, and the poor quality of overall public expenditures in terms of targeting, coverage, leakage, existing conditions of public service delivery, the nagging problem of cost over-runs of development projects due to procrastination of their execution, on the other. This is the sixth national budget that Finance Minister M.A. Mitch has presented during two successive periods of the Miami League (AL)-led government. The main challenge for implementation of the proposed national budget for FYI 2014-15 will lie in areas of arranging financial resources for its funding, without crossing the limit of the fiscal deficit that has been projected at 5. 0 per cent of GAP. If the limit is crossed, it may destabilize the m acro-economic situation and also have some crowding-out effects on the economic activities in the private sector. The National Board of Revenue (N.B.) that collects the lion's part of government revenues, in the form of duties and taxes, has not been able to fulfill its target in the outgoing fiscal, notwithstanding the fact that it had earlier demonstrated its commendable successes in raising the level of such revenue receipts of the government. The new fiscal measures that the Finance Minister has proposed for the forthcoming fiscal ay provide some cushions to the N.B. for augmenting its revenue collections. But the possible impact of such measures on overall economic activities merits a detailed scrutiny.Meanwhile, the N.B. will need to put extra-ordinary emphasis on widening the tax net, winning the trust and confidence of both the existing and potential taxpayers. It needs a shot in its arm to help strengthen its capacity to do this and that, too, by ensuring transparency of act ions by its field-level officials. Overburdening the existing tax-payers with additional doses of direct taxes and creating additional robbers for economic actors in different sectors by way of any irrational tax structure, are certainly no rational policy choice for the government.Higher tax burden may otherwise lead to a greater degree of tax evasion or avoidance. Tax compliance depends, to a large extent, on the rate of tax and duty structure. So far the efforts for collection of domestic resources are concerned, there are strong reasons for the government to raise the levels of its revenue receipts from non-N.B. agencies or departments and enhance the volume of such earnings other than taxes, duties etc. , from different government agencies, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies and all other relevant sources. The proposed budget for the forthcoming fiscal so. Meanwhile, the availability of the projected external assistance that will be required for footing the estimated budgetar y expenditure, particularly on the development (public investment) side, will be predicated upon efforts to help accelerate the pace of implementation of the aided projects. Here, the developments in the recent years do need to be further consolidated and strengthened to a large extent, if the current situation about a bulging aid pipeline is to be improved. This is another daunting challenge. If the government fails to collect or mobiles the financial resources, both domestic and external, at the level projected in the proposed budget, it will be forced to either cut back its development spending in the second half of fiscal 2014-2015 or to borrow more from both banking and non-banking sources than what has been projected. Neither of these two is welcome. If public investments in priority areas fall short of the target, the potential of the economy to move onto a higher growth trajectory will intention to remain unrealized. If the government's borrowings overshoot the projected level , it will entail most unwelcome consequences. The fiscal deficit will then exceed the projected level, causing macro-economic pressures: the private sector may face resource constraints; interest payments on account of domestic public debt may swell further without enhancing the capacity of the economy to foot the related bill etc. At this stage, it would be worthwhile to draw the attention of all concerned to the imperatives for facilitating the expansion of investment activities in the private sector. The real test of the proposed budget for fiscal 2014-15 lies in this particular area. A synergy of actions will be needed to make this happen. The national budget cannot certainly address all the issues that are badly impacting new private investments. But it has to facilitate the forging of such a synergy. If private investments do not rise, the prospects of the economy to generate new Jobs, create more income-earning opportunities and pave the way for its accelerated growth rate, al ong the desired lines, will continue to delude all concerned.

Book Report †Middle School Series Essay

Rafe Khatchadorian has enough issues around his family life, without throwing his first year of middle school into the mix. Luckily, he’s got an incredible plan for the best year ever, if only he can pull it off. With his best friend Leonardo the Silent awarding him points, Rafe tries to break every rule in his school’s Code of Conduct. Having gum in class scores him 5,000 points, running through the hallways, another 10,000 points and pulling the fire alarm, 50,000 points! But not everyone thinks that Rafe’s game is a good idea, especially the teachers, parents and other students at the school, so he’ll have to decide if winning is all that matters, or if he’s finally ready to face the rules, bullies, and truths he’s been avoiding. http://www.jamespatterson.com/books_middleSchool.php#.UWY9FFdstN4 Middle School the Worst Years of My Life is written by James Patterson and is a realistic fiction book that takes you through the journey of Rafe’s first year at middle school, dealing with the awkwardness of crushes, bullies, and family issues as he tries to break every rule in the school’s Code of Conduct. The book features many different pictures that tell you what’s going on as well, and is considered a graphic novel. Middle School the Worst Years of my Life received a critical acclaim from the most reviewers, it won the YALSA 2012’s Top Ten Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Readers award and James Patterson got nominated for the Children’s Book Council’s Author of the Year award. James has written well over 50 books, a lot of them being in series, and has won many awards. Middle School the Worst Years of My Life is the first book in the Middle School series. The setting of the Middle School series is in middle school. There is no specific day or time that this book is set in, other than it being during middle school. A lot of the time the rules that are broken are broken within the school timing, but there are one or two rules that get broken out of school times. I think the setting has been chosen well, and believed it suited the book well. The novel starts with Rafe entering sixth grade at Hills Village Middle School. Beginning the new school year with a negative mindset means that Rafe starts the year bored and believes that ‘it was a prison Pilgrims back then, but not too much has changed. Now it’s a prison for sixth, seventh and eighth graders.’ Rafe quickly understands that he will be stuck in middle school for 3 years, and invents â€Å"Operation R.A.F.E.† with his best friend Leonardo the Silent. The plan was to break every single rule in the schools handbook. He also has to put up with the issues in his home life. His mum is always working double shifts at a diner and never gets time with her children, Rafe, and Rafe’s younger sister, Georgia. He has a verbally abusive stepfather (Bear) who looks after him when his mother is away. Then, there’s Jeanne Galletta, who Rafe is madly in love with. Jeanne is a doubtful of Rafe’s plan and wishes he would spend more time on school work then his games. Operation R.A.F.E’s consequences consists of many detentions with his English teacher, Ms. Donatello. This creates tension between Rafe’s family, and after having a fight with Bear about Leonardo and how he is a bad influence on Rafe, we discover that Leonardo is Rafe’s imaginary friend. Rafe’s actions eventually lead to bad grades, getting himself suspended, and then forced to be tutored by Jeanne, whom he had been trying to avoid because she doesn‘t like him. While the tension in the family gets stronger, Bear throws Rafe’s mother to the ground and moves out, Rafe gets expelled for spraying graffiti on the school walls, but Ms. Donatello see’s the potential artist within him and comes up with the idea to send him to art school. The final part of the book reveals that Leonardo is Rafe’s dead twin brother. An exciting part of the novel is when Rafe graffiti’s the school wall at four in the morning. ‘The next morning, I left a note for Mom saying that I had to go to school extra early to work on a project, which was basically true. I just left out the part about how early meant four in the morning and project meant highly illegal activity. â€Å"You’re not going to regret this,† Leo kept telling me. The way he saw it, the whole point of Operation R.A.F.E. was about breaking rules, so why should I let a little thing like losing the game stop me from doing the part I’d been looking forward to the most? Like I said before – genius†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦I unpacked my new flat black marker, a big old camping flashlight, and some of my latest practice sketches. I’d drawn these ones on graph paper, which is kind of like a brick wall, to show me how big everything would need to be. But Leo was feeling impatient, â€Å"You don’t need those anymore,† he said. â€Å"The clock’s ticking. Stop thinking so much and just go.† So I did. I set up the flashlight on a rock so that it was shining right at the wall. Then I picked up my marker and started. It was king of slow-moving at the beginning. I wasn’t sure what to draw first, or what order to do things in. But the more I kept going, the more I got into it, and then somewhere along the way everything started to flow†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦.After a while I was running around like crazy, working over here, working over there and getting up on an old trash can to reach the higher parts when I needed to. The whole thing started to get so big that I felt like I was inside it, even while I was still drawing. It was like Leo had said – I wasn’t thinking anymore. I was just doing it, like the marker was just another part of me, and the lines and shapes and pictures were coming right out of my hand.’ After a while, the police show up, and are surprised that a kid had done all that work, but then again, it was illegal, so into the cop car went Rafe and Leo. I like this part of the novel because I felt as if I was in the actual scene. It was as if I was Leo and I was scared we’d get caught. This scene, although it’s short, it was intense. You didn’t want Rafe to get caught, but you wanted to know what would have happened when he got caught. I just believe that the way this chapter/scene has been written makes it believable and makes you feel like you’re there. The style of this novel is average pace. The novel begins out very slowly, and it doesn’t have much meaning, but once the novel gets a fair way into it, the drama begins, and the pace slowly picks up. At the end of the novel, things get more intense and more happens in a shorter amount of time, and by the end of the novel, so much has happened, that it takes a while to comprehend what has happened, but you realise that James wrote it that way for a reason, and to me, that reason was so that he could have a short book, that had a lot in it, and might eventually be able to make a movie, much like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies. The Worst Years of my Life uses a lot of slang humour, but not so much that it’s over powering, it’s just enough that it creates the characteristics of the book. A genre is the category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter. There are several genre’s the feature in this novel, some more than others. The genres that feature heavily in Middle School the Worst Years of My Life are: Comedy Humour Drama The genre that is featured in the book, but not as heavily is romance. Have you ever had a crush on someone and had them not like you back? Romance is a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love. Rafe Khatchadorian discovers his feelings for Jeanne Galletta on one of his first days at school. They were all sitting in the school gym and she was one of the candidates for the student council representatives and part way through or speech, she offers to buy Rafe fries later that day, and that’s when he knew he liked her. Towards the end of the novel, Rafe’s grades start to go downhill and the school as well as his Mum think it’s a good idea to get some extra help. Little did Rafe know that his dream girl Jeanne was going to be his tutor. Even though Rafe is a teenage boy who likes girls, middle school would not be any good without a sense of humor or a comedian mixed into the scene. The biggest class clown in the school is here, and his name? Rafe Khatchadorian. A class clown is the funniest person in the class who often gets in trouble. Rafe’s first year at middle school is spent trouble making and trying to make people laugh, but not everyone thinks that his plan to break every rule in the Code of Conduct. Miller the Killer was the school bully, and his new prey is Rafe. Throughout Rafe’s middle school year, he comes into conflict with Miller many times. The biggest thing that happens to Rafe because of Miller the Killer is when he discovers Rafe’s notebook with all the Operation R.A.F.E. (Rules Aren’t For Everyone) and makes Rafe buy each page back off of him for a dollar a page, but Rafe discovers Miller’s plan with the notebook early on, and it isn’t pretty. Miller the Killer enjoys making Rafe’s first year at middle school hell, but Rafe enjoys the humorous side of school. School is tough on everyone, so what’s the best way to get through? Have fun! And that’s what Rafe intends to do by breaking all the rules in the Code of Conduct and earning himself points. The catch is, he only gets given three lives, and if he breaks all three, the games over. All the seriousness aside, Rafe gives himself, and Leo a good laugh. The funniest scene in the book to me was when Rafe decides to break the schools dress code, and he was given the best chance to do this with Halloween just around the corner. Leo knew that it would only be a matter of time before Rafe was caught by a teacher, so Leo was giving him 10,000 points for every 50 yards of the school he covered in his costume. Rafe ran, as fast as he could in all black, with a pocket full of Cheerios as throwing stars, and nunchucks made from paper towel roles with rope knotted at either end. Yep, you guessed it. Rafe was a ninja. ‘I came tearing out of that bathroom at full speed and just kept running – through the first floor (10,000!), up the stairs (10,000!), down the second floor hall past all the lockers (10,000!), throwing Cheerios and swinging my nunchucks like crazy.’ Right before he got caught, Miller the Killer was right in his aim. ‘I made sure my mask was pulled down tight over my face. Then I took a big windup as I went by, and beaned him upside the head with one of the chucks (10,000!). â€Å"What the – ?† Miller turned the wrong way, just as I passed him. By the time he’d figured out where I came from and where I was headed, I’d already left him in the dust. He was twice as big as me, but I was twice as fast. Eat it, Miller!’ And then it happened. Caught right in the act. Yep, a teacher saw him†¦ Well, he ran into the teacher. Games over Rafe. ‘And then – splam! I ran right into Mrs. Stricker. Literally. Let’s just say, she wasn’t in the mood for wrestling.’ But Rafe had another plan and it was going to earn him double points. ‘I went into the bathroom and came out a minute later without my ninja costume, running just as fast as before. Some kids got out of my way. Some even ran in the other direction. A few of the girls screamed when I cam2 through, but I don’t think they meant it. And a few people even yelled stuff like â€Å"Go, Rafe, go!† and â€Å"Don’t let ‘em get you!† Because, like I said, I wasn’t wearing my ninja costume anymore. In fact, I wasn’t wearing much of anything at all.’ No, he wasn’t naked, but he wasn’t wearing much†¦ ‘Just sneakers, a pair of boxers, and a big old smile.’ Boy, did Rafe get in big trouble for that, but on the other hand, he did earn himself a lot of points! Rafe loves making people laugh, and I believe that the reason he does it isn’t for other people, but he does it to make himself feel good. I belie ve that the main theme in this novel is coming of age and growing up into a better person in a way. To me, I think this means that by using the resources that are around you (family, friends etc.) to become the person you are supposed to be. For Rafe, this is trying to get over his prank, funny, humorous stage, and into the more serious schooling stage. This can be hard for some people, especially when they don’t get along with their family, and when their only friend is in their imagination, but by the end of the book, Rafe has realised that even though he isn’t academically smart, he does have a gift with art, which sees him going to art school. Love is also in the novel, as Rafe discovers Jeanne Galletta, but it doesn’t impact on the story as much as growing up does. The main characters in the book are: Rafael (Rafe) Khatchadorian – Rafe is the trouble maker in the story who is in his first year at Hills Village Middle School. Rafe is important because without him, there is no story. I like this character because he makes the book fun. Even though he isn’t an actual person, this character has a funny personality and a childish sense of humour. I believe that James Patterson has described this character well. Georgia Khatchadorian – Georgia is Rafe’s annoying little sister who likes to be in everyone’s business and know what’s going on in Rafe’s life, especially when he is in trouble. She is also the family tattletale and always dobs Rafe in when she catches him doing something wrong. Even though Georgia annoys Rafe a lot, he also protects her, which is like all siblings love-hate relationships. I like her because I think I can relate to her because I am the younger sister in my family, and I like to annoy my older brother, but I also know that he will always be there for me. I think that Georgia is a main character in this story because she is a part of Rafe’s home issues because she never leaves him alone and always wants to know what’s going on in his life. Carl AKA Bear – Bear is Georgia and Rafe’s, abusive, rude, obese stepdad who can be found on the couch. Bear is often yelling at Rafe after school. He also argues with Mrs. Khatchadorian, Rafe and Georgia’s mum, and one argument let Bear to accidently push her down the front steps, and when the police show up, it doesn’t look good for Carl. I don’t like him at all! He’s so rude and obnoxious, and I would hate to have a step parent as bad as him. Leonardo (Leo) the Silent – Leo is Rafe’s best friend, who we later discover is in his imagination. We also later find out that Leo was Rafe’s twin brother who died when he was still a baby. I think that Leo is the glue that holds everything together. He helps Rafe with school, with home, and he gives him the motivation to keep going when things get tough. I really like Leo the Silent because even though he isn’t real, he is the perfect best friend. Jeanne (Jay-Gee) Galletta – Jeanne is Rafe’s crush. He is madly in love with her, but she is also the goody-two-shoes of the school, and she hates Operation R.A.F.E. I like her but I don’t. I feel like she tries too hard to be a good student, and doesn’t give herself enough freedom, which is why I don’t like her. I think that being a teenager, or getting to that stage means that you can manage school and social life, and to me, it’s like she has no social life. She’s important in the story because as we get older, we start to see people in different ways, and we start to like them, and I believe that Jeanne is important because without her, it’s not a real adolescent’s life. Ms. Donatello AKA the Dragon Lady – Ms. Donatello is Rafe’s English teacher, as well as his detention buddy. Even though she is strict and can get aggravated easily, she also has Rafe’s best interest at heart and wouldn’t help him if she didn’t believe he was better than what he shows. I like her because I have had plenty of teachers that are hard on me, but they do it because they want what’s best, and without that push, we wouldn’t grow and evolve as people. I understand why Rafe doesn’t particular like her, but teachers always want what’s best, and he will eventually see that. Miller AKA Miller the Killer – Miller is the school bully, hence the name ‘Miller the Killer.’ He is constantly giving Rafe a hard time throughout his first year at middle school, and without the school bully, school wouldn’t be school. There is always that one person that puts people down to make themselves feel good, although not a lot of bullies take kids lunch money, but hurt them mentally, or even physically. I don’t like Miller because I believe that he hurts people because he can and he needs to get disciplined. Without Miller, or a bully in the book, it wouldn’t be like school life, so I can understand why James Patterson included him in it. I’m not much of a reader, but I really enjoyed this book, and I found it easy to understand and comprehend because of the little sketches throughout the book. This book is much like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, and I believe it is aimed at the same kind of age group. I think that I was too old to read this novel, but I didn’t find it so easy that I could just read it in a day, but not hard enough that it took me forever to read. It was a good balance, so I would suggest it for kids 13 years old and younger, somewhere between 9 and 13. To be honest, it was a good book, but it could have been made longer so not everything happened at once towards the end. In general, it was a good read, and I would recommend it to younger kids who enjoy having a good laugh and getting into trouble.

Explain How a Job Analysis Is Used to Create a Job Description Essay Example

Explain How a Job Analysis Is Used to Create a Job Description Essay Example Explain How a Job Analysis Is Used to Create a Job Description Essay Explain How a Job Analysis Is Used to Create a Job Description Essay Explain How a Job Analysis is used to create a Job Description The team was comfortable differentiating between job analysis and job design. Most of us, as first level supervisors, have some to little input into the job analysis but usually have much more input into the job design. The team was comfortable comprehending the objective of how a job analysis is used to create a job description. Several of the team members have had some sort of experience with job analysis or at least were comfortable with the concept. From the reading, we learned that the purpose of job analysis is to â€Å"specify the work to be done and the personal characteristics that are required to do the work† (Cascio, 2010, p. 167). Human Resources (HR) will develop the job analysis based on the needs of the customer. We also learned that HR will use the customer’s requirements to conduct a thorough job analysis to determine the tasks, experience level, and other job characteristics or requirements of a job. Most students, in their jobs, do not have a hand in analyzing what was needed for a certain tasks received from higher leadership, but instead had to fill the task with the most qualified person. Another student, in his role as a manager, has developed statements of work and the job descriptions for each required position. This student has used the technique numerous times throughout his career. The group agrees that a proper and legal job analysis is best summed up by two statement â€Å"To ensure job relatedness, employers must be able to link required knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (measures of which candidates actually are assessed on) to essential job functions† and â€Å"Finally, recognize that under the ADA it is imperative to distinguish â€Å"essential† from â€Å"nonessential† functions prior to announcing a job or interviewing applicants. Cascio, 2010, p. 169). Explain the Functions of a Job Description Like the first objective, the team was comfortable with the explanation of a job description. The functions of a job description was a simple topic to understand. We learned from the reading that the job description is a direct result of job analysis (Cascio, 2011, p. 167). Most of us have had at some time dealt with job or duty descriptions as part of our jobs. In fact each of us, when we applied for our jobs, had to read and understand the details and requirements of the job description. Two student have had a hand in creating job descriptions for positions on contracts that they have worked on or managed. Job description shows the tasks required to fulfill customer requirements. Another student expressed how being in tune with the responsibilities of one’s’ job is critical for the success of the business. Goals are also essential, as they allow workers to understand what they are doing on a daily basis and how these goals relate to company objectives and the strategic plan. The readings introduced a couple of other job descriptions used today: behavioral and video. References Cascio, W. F. (2010). Start By Finding Your Top-Performing Posts The first part of determining insights into your social media channels involves determining your top posts. Top posts can be found in a number of different ways but it all depends on what the overarching goals of your channels are. For example, if your goal was to drive engagements, you’d be looking for the posts with the most likes, shares, and comments. However, if you’re looking for posts with the most clicks to your website, you’d be tracking link clicks via each social channel’s in-app analytics or an external tool like Google Analytics. Facebook To find the analytics data for your top Facebook posts, go to your business page and select Insights: From there, go to Posts: In your Posts section, scroll down to All Posts Published, and there you’ll be able to see the different metrics for each one of your posts: Twitter To find analytics data for your top Twitter posts, go to your account, click on your profile picture and in the drop-down menu select Analytics: Then in the menu bar, select Tweets: That screen will show you all of the engagement data, and impressions that your tweets have generated for the past 28 days, as well as allowing you to see the top tweets you’ve sent in that time period: Instagram To find the analytics for your Instagram post, click the bar graph in the top right-hand corner of your Instagram profile. Note that you won’t see that bar graph unless you have an Instagram business profile: Once you’re in the Analytics section, scroll down to Posts, and then click on See More: The analytics for your Instagram profile is a bit different because you need to click on each individual post to see its engagement metrics: Pinterest To find the analytics for your Pinterest pins, you’re once again going to need a Pinterest business account. Once that is set, go to the upper left-hand corner and select Analytics.  Then select Your Pinterest Profile: The nice thing about Pinterest is that your top pins are all located in one place. Just scroll down your screen to see them all: LinkedIn LinkedIn is a lot like Pinterest, in the fact that your top post analytics are all located in one place. Go to your page and click on Manage Page: From manage page, select Analytics. In your analytics page, the first thing that surfaces is the Updates section. All of your post data is located there, including: Impressions Clicks Interactions Engagement rate To see a more detailed view, click on the post update: Google+ Finding data for your Google+ posts is possible. Recommended Reading: How to Write for Social Media to Create the Best Posts Did Your Post Incorporate Hashtags? Hashtags can have a powerful impact on how far your posts reach. If you use hashtags on networks that don't support them well, though, they could actually negatively impact your post performance. For some networks to connect to followers, you need to have a lot of hashtags, while for other networks having any hashtags can actually cause a decrease in content views. For example, Facebook should be a hashtag free zone. Why? According to Crazy Egg, hashtags are meant to help users search out information on a subject. Facebook users control that already because they are choosing who and want they want to see in their newsfeeds. Instagram on the other hand, should be full of hashtags. Why? Because according to that same Crazy Egg post, to find and interact with content, you want to see you have to search for it. Hashtags make your content searchable. Should You Be Using Emojis? No one can say that emojis aren’t fun. These tiny little pictures are changing the way we communicate, one keyboard at a time. What channel you should be using emojis on is difficult to determine, as they can sometimes come across as unprofessional. Not to mention emojis, and their meanings are not always as black and white as they may seem. Social Media Today broke down when to use emojis and what they mean on  their blog. The final element we'll focus on are broadcast posts versus  discussion posts. Broadcast posts are posts that are designed to promote your brand or business. They usually sound more like ads and focus mainly on what you can do for your followers. As Rich Mcelaney put it in this blog post for BrassCycle: â€Å"Imagine having a conversation with someone (and we all know people like this) where you ask, â€Å"How are you?† and they launch into an in-depth explanation of every moment of their life since you last saw them. They don't take a breath. If you try to interject with a story of your own, you can see them simply waiting until you stop talking so they can continue.† Discussion posts are  specifically developed to create conversations with your followers. They create conversations that allow your followers to interject and control more of the conversation, which creates a more trustworthy atmosphere. The next section of metrics that you can focus on involves time. What time your posts go out determines how many people in your audience will see it. Obviously, there are times that certain social channels are more active. Those prime times can be found in this blog post, that has been backed by over 16 studies. It’s also important to post your social media messages on the right day. By posting at optimum days and times you’re able to maximize the views that your messages will receive. The more eyeballs you have on a post, the more likely you are to create the engagement and or link clicks you need. The next set of attributes that you’re going to want to record focuses on the different types of media that you’ll have for your posts. Visuals like videos and images are becoming a major key to successful social media posts  which was outlined by Hubspot earlier this year. Image and Video Colors The psychology of color plays a much more important role than you might think. Saying things like â€Å"red makes people angry† or â€Å"blue creates feelings of calm† are not necessarily accurate because everyone’s personal experiences are different, therefore colors will evoke different emotions in all people. However, according to SnapHelp, 90% of instant decisions  are made on color. They say that audiences are more susceptible to color based on how they think it fits a product. So the colors you choose for your social media channels can have an effect on your audience because they are looking to see if your color scheme fits your brand. For example, we’re used to seeing bright, electric colors in Disney photos and images because the park is always alive and going. People are never sad at Disney world and their color scheme fits that brand perception. According to Media Cause, about 82% of social media video views are watched without sound,  making subtitles vital. Take Tasty  for example. I’m willing to bet you’ve seen one of their recipe videos at least once. The unique thing about those videos and one of the reasons they’re so successful is because they have captions that walk you through the whole recipe. Channels are optimized for certain video and lengths and some will even limit how long videos can be. For example, videos on Instagram need to be under a minute. Not to mention, videos are now being viewed more often on mobile devices and according to social media today, you have less than two seconds  to grab the attention of your viewer. So the number of interactions you have per video can be traced back to how long your video is. Italics or Quote Marks (Formatting Titles)

Italics or Quote Marks (Formatting Titles) Formatting Titles If you need advice about formatting headings in your work, try this post. But if you want to know about formatting titles of other works in your writing (e.g., books or journal articles), you’re in the right place! Read on to find out when to use italics and quote marks for titles in your work. Formatting Titles First, let’s give an example of what we mean. Take the following sentence: Here, â€Å"Game of Thrones† refers to a popular TV show. If we didn’t know this, we might guess from the capitalization, but most style guides also recommend using distinct formatting for titles. This usually means italicizing the title or placing it in quote marks. But when does each apply? Longer Works (Italics) Titles of longer works, such as books or TV shows, are usually italicized: We use italics for Game of Thrones because it refers to an entire TV series. Works that require italics for titles in this manner include: Books and book-length poems Journals, newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals Entire websites and blogs Movies, radio programs, and TV shows Plays, musicals, and other stage shows Paintings, statues, and other works of art Music albums and other long recordings Importantly, all of these are standalone works (i.e., published by themselves rather than as part of a larger whole). So, for example, you would italicize the name of a blog (e.g., Jenny’s Cooking Blog), but not the name of a post taken from that blog (e.g., â€Å"How to Make Beef Stroganoff†). Were 90% sure this is beef stroganoff and not dog food. Shorter Works (Quote Marks) With shorter works that are part of a larger whole, titles should be given in quotation marks. An episode of Game of Thrones, for instance, would be written as follows: Here, the formatting lets us instantly distinguish between an episode title and the show title. Quotation marks are also used when referring to titles of: Chapters from books or edited volumes Articles from newspapers, magazines, journals and other periodicals Particular pages from a website or posts from a blog Individual poems, short stories, and other short literary works Single episodes from a TV series Songs and other short recordings Unpublished writing (regardless of length) With most of these, the key is that they’re published as part of a longer work or series. The only exception to this is unpublished writing (e.g., a PhD dissertation or an unpublished manuscript). Beware Exceptions! As with most rules in writing, there are exceptions to these guidelines about formatting titles. For example, APA has different rules depending on whether a title appears in the main text or the reference list. It is therefore always worth checking your style guide to see if it has specific requirements.

Applications of Graph Theory Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Applications of Graph Theory - Assignment Example In the case of Konigsberg problem, there were seven bridges that connected two islands to the mainland in Konigsberg. People wondered whether one could walk through the seven bridges once. Euler solved the problem by using the graph theory to prove that one could not walk through all the seven bridges once (Shirinivas et al., 2010). Concepts of graph theory are extensively applied in models and study applications in different fields. For example, graph theory concepts are used to study molecules, atoms and bond construction in chemistry. Graph theory concepts are also applied to explore diffusion mechanisms and to measure actors’ prestige in sociology. In biology, graph theory concepts such as vertex represent areas occupied by the particular species population. Edges may represent movement or migration path followed by these species. These concepts are also important in tracking the speed at which disease spread and parasite migration in the species. Several graph theoretical concepts are applied in solving different problems in operation research. For example, the graph theory concepts are used to determine the optimal assignment of tasks to individuals (Shirinivas et al., 2010). Computer science utilizes graph theoretical concepts broadly in many sections. These sections include networking, programming, data mining, security, and databases. Networking is a major area where graph theory is widely applied. The two major applications of graph theoretical concepts in networking are Shortest Path Algorithms (SPAs) and the Minimum spanning tree concept. Computer network refers to a linkage of one computer to another in order to exchange or interchange information. Computer networking depends heavily on theoretical concepts of graph theory. A simple computer network can be represented using the graph theory (Hart, 2013). Shortest Path Algorithms (SPAs) are graph theory concepts that are widely used

The Impact of Macro and Micro Environmental Factors on International B Case Study

The Impact of Macro and Micro Environmental Factors on International Business Activities - Case Study Example Macro environmental influences can better be explained by the use of the PESTEL framework. According to Johnson et al (2006), the PESTEL framework is a framework that can be used to categorise the factors that influence the business environment of an organisation into six main types including Political Influences, Economic influences, Technological influences, Socio-cultural Influences, Environmental influences, and Legal influences. The business environment of Inditex is indifferent as Inditex is affected by governmental laws, international laws, competition from other fashion distribution companies, change in interest rate, politics, technology (Dixon 2007) etc. Industria de Diseno Textil S.A (Inditex) together with its subsidiaries operates as a fashion distribution worldwide (Inditex Review 2008). The company's operations include various phases of the fashion process, such as design, manufacture, logistics and distribution to its own managed stores (Inditex Review 2008). The company offers eight commercial concepts including Zara, Pull, Bear, Massimo Donati, Besishka, Stradivarius etc. The company remains a strategic and a key player in the European fashion and distribution market. For example, despite the global economic crisis, the company announced flat same stores sales for 2008 (Inditex Review 2008). ... The company's operations include various phases of the fashion process, such as design, manufacture, logistics and distribution to its own managed stores (Inditex Review 2008). The company offers eight commercial concepts including Zara, Pull, Bear, Massimo Dolti, Besishka, Stradivarius etc. The company remains a strategic and a key player in the European fashion and distribution market. For example, despite the global economic crisis, the company announced flat same stores sales for 2008 (Inditex Review 2008). However, as part of the mega-environment in which the company depends on to effectively carry out its activities, the creator of the Zara fashion chain is not impervious to the global recession (Inditex Review 2008). 2.0 The PESTLE Framework According to Dixon (2007), the PESTLE framework is a way to understand the industry's external environment, which includes Political, Economic, and Social and Technological analysis. These factors will influence company long-term decisions in an industry. Today's business environment is increasingly becoming more turbulent, chaotic and challenging than ever before and to survive, it is vital that a firm can do something better than its competitors ( Wonglimpiyarat 2004:1). Globalization has not only altered the nature and the intensity of competition but has had to dictate and shape organisations in terms of what consumers want, how and when they want it and what they are prepared to pay for it (Hagan 1996:1). Kanter (1995:71) on his work of "Mastering Change" argues that success in the present day business is not for those companies that re-engineer the way they do things, or for those fixing the past. According to Kanter (1995), such an action will not constitute an adequate response. This is so because success is based on an organization’s ability to create, rather than predict the future by developing those products that will literally transform the way the world thinks and view itself and the needs.

How Religion would Respond to Today's Issues Essay

How Religion would Respond to Today's Issues - Essay Example This paper analyses the ways in which religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam respond to today's issues. Hindu religion consists of different castes such as Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras and Chandalas (Jayaram). Brahmins are the upper class caste while Chandals are the lower class caste in Hindu caste system. In other words racism appears in the form of caste system in Hindu religion. Hinduism considers poverty as a virtue rather than curse. In other words, Hindus do believe that the sufferings or poverty in this world is good for getting salvation. Hindus are not much aggressive like some of other religions. They will try to avoid war and murder as much as possible. They are peace loving people which are evident from the fact that India never tried to attack Pakistan even though Pak terrorists created so many problems in Indian soil in the recent past. Hindus normally do not believe in sex activities outside a marital relationship. However, in some of the Hindu castes, keeping more than one wife is allowed. Hindu women command huge respect from Hindu men and it should be note d that some of the goddesses of Hindu religion are females such as Sita, Lakshmi and Saraswathy. Hindus do believe in democratic administrations and they are the strong advocates of freedom and individuality. Education is considered as an essential activity by Hindu religion. Perhaps Buddhists are the most liberal and peace loving people in the world. They hate all types of war and murder activities. Killing of even an insect is a sin in Buddhism. Racism in any form cannot be witnessed in Buddhism. Freedom and liberties are much respected terms in Buddhism. Truthfulness is the major land mark of Buddhism. Buddhism advocates normal sex activities for layman. However, â€Å"Complete sexual continence is considered an essential feature of the monastic life. Intercourse of a heterosexual or homosexual character is automatically a Parajika offense† (Walshe). Capitalism and injustices are unacceptable to Buddhism. Taoism give more emphasize to living in harmony with the environment or nature. Taoism believes in the ancestor spirits and immortals. Taoists believe in a peaceful life filled with happiness. So, war and murder like activities are unacceptable to Taoism. Even though Taoism considers sex as a vital component in the relationship between men and women, it never advocates crazy sex habits or unnatural sex. As per the beliefs of Taoism, â€Å"a strong military was an important tool in human relations, but the conduct of warfare was an absolute last resort. Its consequences so potentially harmful that it had to be understood completely and practiced flawlessly when required†(Davis). Confucianism believes in humanity more than any other religions in the world. It has not much customs or rituals compared to other religions. War and crimes are unacceptable to Confucianism. â€Å"Confucius regarded himself as a transmitter, not the originator, of social values and wisdom† (Dr. Sprunger). Judaism, Christianity and Islam are three Abrahamic relig ions. Even though the origins of these three religions have some common elements, their beliefs are entirely different. Islam does not hesitate to conduct wars against the enemies. In fact killing of enemies of religion is a sacred act in Islam. Jews and Christians are also seeing no dangers in conducting wars even though they are not much adamant in religious belief and thoughts. Jews and Christians give more freedom to the sexual life. Homosexuality is practiced among Christians and Jews even though their religious beliefs are against it. On the other hand such things are punishable acts in Islam. Muslim males can keep

The Baptism Debate Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

The Baptism Debate - Research Paper Example It is, in effect, an initiation into the Christian religion. This discussion examines the history of Baptism as referenced in the Bible, the various ways the ritual is practiced by differing sects of the Christian Church and provides an explanation of its significance in contemporary times. In addition, the paper analyses the differing nuances of its meaning within the Christian religion. The Old Testament does not specifically reference Baptism. The ritual is explicitly of New Testament origin. However, there are mentions of water being used in purification of soul ceremonies which became inserted in the Christian Baptism ceremony. â€Å"I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean† Ezekiel 36:25. 1 Baptism in the New Testament was introduced by John the Baptist who was an undetermined relative of Jesus. John practiced Baptism for people who wished to repent their sins and receive forgiveness by fully immersing them in the Jordan River. This practice of absolving sin by water would become the founding concept for the baptismal ritual and a significant, though not only, component of modern baptism. John baptized his relative Jesus in the Jordan River as he had many others even though, according to the Bible, Jesus was without sin. This act would become a principal aspect of Jesus’ ministry therefore a principal part of the Christian religion. This occurrence also marks the emergence of another aspect of the Christian religion, the Holy Trinity. The son, Christ, heard the Father’s (God’s) voice while the Holy Spirit â€Å"descend[ed] on him like a dove† Mark 1:10. 2 There does not exist specific instructions on how Christians should practice baptism in The New Testament, but within its pages are insights regarding how Jesus and his disciples perceived the act. Christians may only utilise conjecture regarding the suitable method of procedure and connotation of the baptism ritual by examining the numerous Biblical ve rses which refer to this sacrament. Nicodemus said to Him, â€Å"How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born, can he?† â€Å"Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.† John 3:5 â€Å"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.† Matthew 28:19 3 The interpretation of the verses related to baptism, as do all other verses of the Bible, vary widely, person to person, and sect to sect and are subject to modification throughout the years and continue to be disputed. An early interpretation of the baptism ritual was penned by the Apostle Barnabas in the First century. â€Å"We indeed descend into the water
